Limbo Group Exhibition at Oak Cliff Assembly

Limbo, a group show curated by Simon Okoro and Tobias Jacob, will be held on Nov 12. The exhibition features Dallas-based artists working in photography, painting, and interactive sculpture. Limbo bridges mediums and alters traditional displays, bringing the show into a disorienting realm.

The presentation will feature Austin James Hunt, Rachel Henson, Peter Timinsky, Alexandra Hulsey, Hikhil Paladugu, Zachary Pinson Hopgood, Okoro, and Jacob, among others. Paintings of African masquerade spirits, image transfers onto food, and mixed media paintings will fill the space. The event will be held at the Oak Cliff Assembly located at 919 Morrell Avenue in Dallas, Tx.

Limbo plays into its historic environment, a 1941 lighthouse church transformed into a multifunctional space. The venue will disembody the viewers in attendance as they are welcomed into the cathedral to observe the simultaneity of time and lived experiences in the artworks.

Hulsey investigates social landscapes and their relation to nature through photography-based collages. Timinsky continues this exploration of human relationships through abstract mixed-media paintings, focusing on the interaction between the past and present. Echoing alongside these artists in the grand cathedral will be Okoro’s paintings of African Masquerades — dancing events of masked individuals embodying the sacred figures of ancestral beings.

Ruminating on life captured in frames is a slew of photographers and multimedia artists. From Jacob’s western landscape photographs, including, Illusions from the Devil Will Not Last (2022), to Pinson’s short film TAKE ME BACK AND TAKE ME FAST, questions surrounding the human history of present environments arise.

Limbo asks the viewers to ⁣consider the uncertain sphere they exist in and how they will interact with the past. The cathedral offers a space between realities for the art where attendees will leave energized to explore the realm considering human existence and continuance of place.

Artists featured in the show will be in attendance.
